Census Records

1881 Census

The Hampshire part of the national census held in 1881 is available on microfiche. These fiche are transcripts from the original records and there is a marked lack of addresses.

There are four main categories:

  1. INFORMATION AS ENUMERATED.
    Arranged by Census Place (although not in strict alphabetical order) listing the Address (where there is one), Surname, Forename and other details of each occupant.
  2. SURNAMES INDEX.
    Arranged by Surname in alphabetical order followed by Forename and the rest of the information.
  3. BIRTH PLACE INDEX.
    Arranged by Surname in alphabetical order, then Place of Birth followed by the rest of the information.
  4. CENSUS PLACE INDEX.
    Arranged by Surname in alphabetical order, then Place of Census followed by the rest of the information.

There are some other fiche giving a list of vessels, a list of institutions such as workhouses and some miscellaneous notes.

The fiche are kept in a plastic boxes at the Enquiry Desk and are available on request.

1991 Census

These fiche contain statistical information derived from the 10% sample and 100% sample. It is arranged by Electoral Ward but does not contain any names or addresses.

Church Crookham, Crondall and Fleet are all on fiche 1 of the 10% sample and on fiches 1 and 3 of the 100% sample. They are available on request at the Enquiry Desk.
