Description of the Group |
|
Chichester Amateur Operatic Society (CAOS)
was formed as a Gilbert and Sullivan society and the first performance
by the society was the Pirates of Penzance on the 18th January
1911. Although still performing the occasional Gilbert and Sullivan
operetta, the society became more ambitious turning to Pantomime, Old
Tyme Music Hall and musicals such as Die Fledermaus, The Merry Widow,
Waltz's from Vienna, Oklahoma, Annie Get Your Gun, Brigadoon, The
Boyfriend, and Underneath the Arches. With this more ambitious
programme, it was decided to rename the society in 2003 CAOS Musical
Productions. Our rehearsal evening is on Fridays at St Wilfrid's
Church Hall, Chichester. We endeavour to cater for all ages and our
current memberships spans over 60 years.

Collingwood RSC (Random
Salad Company) is one of the longest standing Amateur Dramatic Societies in the area,
existing in one form or another for over 60 years. Based in the Millennium Hall, HMS
Collingwood, we put on two main shows a year. One in the spring for the RNTA Drama
Festival, and the other near Christmas: our renowned Pantomime. The group is made up of
service and civilian members, within HMS Collingwood and the local community. Whether you want to strut your funky stuff on stage, or you have the urge to do lighting, sound or stage-hand; experienced or novice - we want you! There is also the opportunity to be part of the team that go to the Edinburgh Festival, also travel the country with WARCRAFT (stage-fight display) and LUDUS GLADIATORIA (re-enactors). CCADS was founded in
1992 and aims to produce high quality theatre, enhance the performing skills of its
members and make theatre available to those who would not otherwise experience it. We pride ourselves on the wide range of plays and musical productions we stage and ot the high standard of talent and versatility within the group. CCADS supports charitable causes where possible. We currently have a membership of 40 people of all ages, and rely solely on our members and ticket sales to fund productions. |

Formed in 1996, the Crofton
Amateur Dramatic Society (CADS) produce at least 2 shows a year; a comedy and a
Christmas pantomime. CADS perform at the Crofton Community Association, Stubbington, and rehearse on Thursday evenings from 8pm to 10pm. We have bout 20 members, some with considerable experience. Most live in the Stubbington area. Our objective is to perform imaginative productions for the enjoyment of the local community. In 2006, our 10th anniversary year, we performed the wartime comedy 'Allo 'Allo, set in Rene's cafe. It was both a sell-out and also very enjoyable. The pantomime was Sleeping Beauty. |

Founded in 1933, Denmead Operatic
Society is now one of the leading amateur operatic societies in the South of
Hampshire, dedicated to promoting the operatic and dramatic arts in the region, through
performances, concerts and workshops. The Society specialises in the works of W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan, but also encompasses some of the less frequently performed operettas and musicals of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In recent years, we have branched out into other areas such as revue style shows, old time music hall and concerts of favourites from the West End and Broadway shows, and mainstream musicals, such as Fiddler on the Roof. Seventy-four years on, Denmead Operatic Society continues to flourish with some 35 members, many of long-standing and considerable experience, and others of the younger generation who we hope will continue the high standards which have been established and maintained over the years. |

Dynamo Youth Theatre is a performance-based theatre group using the facilities of the Havant Arts Centre, providing drama, music, and dance experience, for 65 young people aged between 11 and 18. Created in 1981 by Andrew Bowker, and a group of enthusiastic adults, Dynamo was formed to develop the skills in performing arts for the young people of the area, outside of the school environment. Our productions since that time now exceed sixty with an eclectic mix including well known musicals, drama, comedy, cabaret and dance reviews, own composition dramas and musicals. Dynamo is still independent and self funding, and is dependent on a dedicated group of adults who give up huge amounts of precious leisure time to support the running of Dynamo, and the productions. We are proud that several of the founding Committee are still working with today’s young people, and that ex-members have returned to help backstage and to direct show. We are particularly keen in this our 25th year to hear from ex-cast and committee members whom we’ve lost touch with over the years. To celebrate this milestone we are organising on Saturday 6th May 2006, a 25th Anniversary Ball, which will be open to members past and present. Fareham Musical Society presents two shows a year at Fareham's Ferneham Hall, in March and September. We are a company of between 70 - 80 members, with a reputation for being friendly. We have a strong membership with ages from 16 – 70 so a diverse bunch! We rehearse twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Henry Cort School in Fareham, and we are always on the look out for new members. In 2006 we won 4 Southern Daily Echo Curtain Call Awards for our productions of Copacabana and Annie and in 2007 received 7 nominations. We have won the NODA Area Accolade of Excellence for our productions of The Sound of Music and Me and My Girl. |

Havant Light Opera was founded in 1978 and currently flourishes with a membership of around 35 from a rich age spread from teens to 80s! We undertake two performances per year, one in June/July and one in December in the Havant Arts Centre. The summer production is usually a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta and the December production is a concert or show with a seasonal flavour. We also sing a wide selection of light music for various charities in churches, halls and residential homes. We very much welcome new members. We rehearse on Mondays at 7.30pm in the Havant Arts Centre. |

Now in their 10th year at their own very comfortable and well-equipped Station Theatre on Hayling Island, HIADS, a member of the Little Theatre Guild of Great Britain were first formed in 1947. They present a programme of plays (normally five a year), films about once a month, an annual pantomime and murder evenings. Other companies and occasional professional one-nighters also visit the Station Theatre. Hayling Musical Society (formerly Hayling Operatic Society) was formed in 1955 and is still going strong, with a membership of around 30, which currently varies in age from 8 to 83!!! We were once again delighted to receive the NODA Southern Region Area 10 Accolade of Excellence - Best Musical for our April 2007 production of Stephen Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, having won a similar award in 2003 for Sweet Charity. We aim to produce 2 shows a year from the "tried and tested" to the slightly more challenging, and welcome new members, either on stage or off. Celebrating 40 years in operation in 2002, the Highbury Players are enjoying a most successful period in their history. Although they are a small group, they are able to stage 2 plays a year and have 82 patrons, who are invited to most events held. HATS was founded in 1948 as a play-reading society. It is now a well-established amateur dramatics society, normally putting on three productions a year - sometimes full-length plays, sometimes short plays or sketches - in Merchistoun Hall, Horndean. Our aim is to encourage anyone who is interested to get involved in any aspect of amateur theatre. We welcome new members, aged 16 and above. Founded in 1992, HumDrum consists of people from the Portsmouth region who were seeking an innovative, experimental theatre company in the local area. Although many existing groups would have satisfied some member's requirements, none can satisfy all. Though this can never be an integral part of the company's policy, it has helped pave the way towards more reachable goals. HumDrum has three main aims: to bring under-performed works into the area; to present familiar works in a new or unusual manner; and to develop the artistic skills of its members. |

Fareham based Innuendo Theatre Group are
one of the newest and freshest groups on the local amateur theatre scene.
Unusual in that it does not have a standing membership, and so has a
constant flow of fresh talent taking part in its productions, ITG is
breaking the mould of amateur theatre groups by moving away from
dogmatically sticking to one genre of theatre and always using the same
director and the same cast for every production. All our shows have open
auditions and casting is done on a "who's best for the role" not a "mates
first" basis! If you are looking for something new, for a group that produces a healthy mixture of comedies, dramas and musicals, if you are looking for a group that casts roles based on talent rather than how long a person has been in the group, then ITG is the group for you. |

Are an energetic theatre company that like to
welcome new members and encourage people of all backgrounds and experience
to just have a go ! Known for producing original work, mostly from within
the company M27Onstage are currently preparing for their April 08 show
called 'ICU'. An original comedy set in a reality TV show with a diverse range of weird and self obsessed characters. As the story develops we learn more about the glory seeking fame and fortune hungry nobodies along with the show's host (a man whose voice seems to pass the pain threshold of anyone in earshot). | The Mulberry Singers |
We are a choir which is growing in reputation for its excellent singing and friendly atmosphere. Some of our singers are more experienced than others, and are well known locally - but everyone is made to feel welcome. We meet at Drayton Methodist Church on the corner of Havant Rd. and Station Rd. Drayton every Wednesday evening 7.30-9.30 pm to rehearse concerts in aid of local charities for which we have raised substantial amounts of money. Under the leadership of Alan Routley, and with the piano accompaniment of Christopher Hyson. Our repertoire, for a small choir, is excellent, but we are limited by numbers as to what we can do. So, we are actively seeking new members, particularly tenors, basses and contraltos. An ability to sight-read is desirable, but not essential. |

| One Off Productions |
ONE OFF PRODUCTIONS was formed to present classic, great plays that are on an Exam syllabus. This has enabled us to perform plays such as 'The Glass Menagerie', 'Hedda Gabler', 'Three Sisters', and 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' at The New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth without becoming bankrupt! We have no subsidy or grants and without the schools/colleges support would not exist. As we are not a membership company it enables us to invite the very best of talent in the region to act/direct with us, and is borne out by the many 'golden opinions' and awards we have received. Our productions of 'Blue Remembered Hills', 'Of Mice and Men', 'The Crucible', and 'An Inspector Calls', were each attended by nearly fifteen hundred students from over over thirty schools as far afield as Bournemouth, Newbury, Crawley, and Brighton with several nights sold out! |

| Portchester Players | Founded in the early 1960s, Portchester Players are currently celebrating over 40 years in the business. Over the years, we have tackled pretty much all forms of theatre and our annual programme is generally along the lines of Panto (January), Play (April), Musical (July) and Play (October). The Players also enter the annual Totton Drama Festival, which is the first round of the All England Drama Festival. We are a relatively small society and our base is the Portchester Community Centre, where we rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are always happy to welcome new members. |

Founded in 1926, the Portsmouth Players, since their initial production in 1927 of The Gondoliers, have presented a wide range of musicals, including many classics and a number of new shows. The Portsmouth Players aim to work to the highest possible professional standard, and employs professional Directors and Choreographers, Musical Directors and Musicians, scenery and costumes in a full-size theatre. Each production costs £30,000 - £40,000 to stage, and audiences for previous shows have regularly exceeded 8,000 for a week's run. As well as three main musical productions each year, Players also perform a variety of concerts, cabarets and other shows at the Barn (their headquarters in Milton Park) and other venues. There is also an active youth section: Theatre 11-18, which was founded in 1978 and aims to develop in young people a range of theatre skills and the discipline of working with others through training, workshops and an annual musical production. Many members of Theatre 11-18 graduate to the senior company, and a number have gone on to train at Stage School and enter the professional theatre. |

Purbrook Amateur Theatre Society has been established since 1989 and evolved from the former Lovedean Amateur Dramatic Society, when it changed venue. We are a local group which meet every Friday evening at 7.30pm - we perform 2 shows per year - usually a Summer Show in June/July and a Panto in Dec. There are currently 18 adult members and we have 8 junior members. We meet and perform at the Deverell Hall in London Road, Purbrook, and rehearse every Friday evening from 7.30pm. The Soberton Players are
based in the villages of Soberton and Newtown in the picturesque Meon
Valley, between Portsmouth and Southampton. Many of the Players live
locally, but our ranks are often swelled by talent from further afield, as
well as by former residents who have left the area - and all receive a very
warm welcome from this friendly group. We perform two productions a year, ranging from farce and comedy to pantomime and musicals. We are always keen to welcome new members to act or help backstage. The Southsea Shakespeare Actors are
one of Portsmouth's oldest and most well-renowned amateur theatre
companies. We produce 3-4 productions a year at venues across the city.
The SSA boasts a large membership of both acting and backstage talents, and we cater for people of all ages, though for full membership you must be over 16 years. The SSA offers the chance to see and, if you want to, perform and direct in the plays of Shakespeare and other writers of merit; and it is also a great way to meet people and have fun.
Our youth company, Upstage! is aimed at
teenagers, presenting the opportunity to learn theatre skills and take
part in in-house and main house productions. The group meets once a
week during term-time at our HQ in Omega Street, Portsmouth.
We also have a group of supporters of the company, the "Friends of the SSA". As well as receiving our regular newsletter "Billboard", Friends are entitled to attend our in-house productions and social events, get generous discounts on tickets and vote at the AGM. We have recently celebrated our 60th anniversary and have a varied and exciting programme of productions on the horizon to begin the next 60.... |

Formed in 1980, the Stage One Youth Theatre Group produces shows from the West End musicals. The Company is open to members between the ages of 8 and 18. Based at Mayfield School, Portsmouth, the group rehearses on Friday evenings, from 7 to 9pm. Stage One encourages and develops participation in arts activities. Its objective is the cultivation of the arts and drama for the youth of today. The Company achieves its aims by allowing members to develop and grow their talents, build their confidence, learn new skills and enjoy the arts, music and drama. And, above all, to have FUN. |

STP Musicals was born in 2004 - a
reincarnation of Southern Theatre Productions. In 2005 a Junior
Section was created named STP Musicals Academy and the group are now
in rehearsals for their 10th production. Former venues include the
Theatre Royal Winchester and Hanger Farm Arts Centre. 2007 sees a
return to Ferneham Hall in Fareham for Disney’s High School Musical.

Sultan Theatre
Group is a self funded amateur theatrical group that puts on two
entertaining shows a year. The first is staged around the end of March
early April and serves as our annual entry to the RNTA Drama Festival.
The second is staged early December and provides the seasonal fun in our
notorious Pantomime. |

The University of Portsmouth Dramatic and Musical Society is the oldest such society in the area, dating back to April 1921 when, what had been "Portsmouth Municipal College - the Galleon Concert Party" became the "Portsmouth Municipal College Dramatic Society". The Society at once became a member of the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) and added the word "Musical" to its title the following year. Three name changes followed, reflecting changes in the name of the institution. We have a complete list of productions since 1924, with just four years missing - 1929, 1930, 1931 and 1942 - so if anyone can fill in these gaps, we'd be most appreciative. UPDMS is a mainly student-led society, but we welcome everyone as we begin our rehearsal sequence in late September/early October for productions in the Spring. We audition for Principal roles, but not for the chorus, and if your main interest is dancing or working backstage, or in lighting etc., we need you too! Our current Producer is Lizzy Leggat, a 2nd-year Creative and Performing Arts student, while the University's Director of Music, Colin Jagger, did his first production in March 2001. |

Victory-Land has been established since 1982, initially as a professional touring company. By 1985 the Company had become a teaching base for a group of children wishing to gain professional training - thus Victory-Land Theatre School was formed. Since then we have gone from strength to strength evolving into the Theatre School we are today, which encourages individual growth within a great family atmosphere. Pupils of all ages learn to respect one another, developing self-confidence whilst working as a team towards productions, and some to train towards a career in the arts. |

Xposed Productions perform musical compilations of singing and dancing. The purpose of the Society is to develop and enhance local talent, and Xposed's producers, Angie Geach and Edward Winkworth, believe that Xposed Productions is a stepping stone for some rising stars of the future. The Society is a non-profit making organisation and any profits made from its productions are re-invested into the next, to endure that it is "bigger and better" than the previous one.
