Kings Theatre, Southsea

Kings Theatre, Southsea - picture by Tony Chappell

The Kings Theatre was designed by Frank Matcham, following his successful remodelling of the Theatre Royal, and opened in September 1907. The theatre had a capacity of 1600 in stalls, dress circle, upper circle and gallery. It is now owned and operated by the Kings Theatre Trust with support from Portsmouth City Council and is the only theatre left in Portsmouth that can accommodate full-scale productions.

On September 30th 2007 the theatre celebrated its 100th birthday. The auditorium glowed and shone in its original Edwardian splendour due to the vast amount of restoration work that was carried out over the summer. The theatre looks absolutely fabulous and it is highly recommended to visit now the auditorium is finished.

New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth

The current theatre, designed by C.J. Phipps, was built in 1884, replacing the original Theatre Royal, acquiring the "New" prefix, and having a capacity of 2000 on three tiers. It was closed for remodelling by Frank Matcham in 1900 and finally closed in 1966. The stage and technical area were destroyed by fire in 1972 but the theatre was saved from demolition by the Theatre Royal Society, which purchased the theatre from the Portsmouth Theatres Company in 1980. It has gradually been restored to its current condition, mainly by the hard work of volunteers, and become an operating theatre again, albeit with a temporary stage in front of the old proscenium arch. Improvements and refurbishments carried out in 2004, which saw the re-opening of the upper circle, have increased the seating capacity to 525.

St. Peter's Theatre, Southsea

Seating approximately 200, this is one of only about six amateur venues in the country with flying facilities for scenery. Sixteen flying lines were recently replaced and an extra eight lines will be added in the near future, as funds become available. As well as the new flying system, the theatre has recently been repainted and has new heating, a new Box Office, new hall curtains and new main tableau curtains, plus tiered seating. The raised stage has also been resurfaced.

The theatre, which is used for performances by several local amateur companies and a Theatre School, is on the upper level of a large building opened in 1924. There is also a lower hall with further rooms available for rehearsals.
