Aims and Objectives

Philosophy

To develop the fun and exciting world of Paddlesport within the Southern Area of the Sea Cadet Corps, whilst maintaining the three pillars of ‘Coaching’, ‘Competition’ and ‘Paddlesport Skills’.

Southern Area Paddling - Goals

Coaching

  • Increase the number of paddling staff within Southern Area. (The aim is to have one Coach at each unit within Southern Area).

  • Facilitate the shift from SCC Supervisor to BCU Coaching awards.

  • Enable Cadets to work towards BCU Coach awards.

  • Provide continuation training for existing Coaching Staff.

  • Monitor the number of Supervisors/Coaches and provide details on their location and capabilities.

Competition

  • Provide an enjoyable, safe, competitive event at Area level which will allow selection of the best cadets to represent the Area at Nationals.

  • Provide training for cadets selected for the National Regatta.

  • Improve Southern Area's performance at the National Regatta.

  • Provide race training courses for staff to improve the 'grass roots' coaching of racing at Unit and District level.

Paddling Skills

  • Provide progression courses to advance cadet and staff paddling skills. Area courses will focus on intermediate and advanced skills, introductory courses (BCU 1 Star) will be provided at Unit/District level.

  • Promote Open Canoeing awards as an alternative to Kayak based paddling.

  • Provide Safety and Rescue courses to enhance paddler safety skills, facilitate expeditions (D of E) and to satisfy Coaching pre-requisites.

  • Encourage cadets and staff to progress onto specific disciplines at a higher level, for example: Sea, Inland White Water or Surf.
