BCU Changes

The BCU has reviewed and updates its coaching qualifications and personal skills qualifications.  Coaching awards have adopted the requirements of the United Kingdom Coaching Certificate (UKCC) with new awards offered with UKCC endorsement. Personal paddling skills awards are now available in two schemes; the Paddlepower scheme aimed at children and the star awards aimed at adults. These changes will affect all existing BCU Coaches and those wanting to become a Coach.

The following sections provide more information on the scheme changes:

New BCU Star Syllabuses

The new star awards come into force on the 01st September 2007.  The syllabuses, coaching notes and assessors notes are available for download from the BCU website:

New Coaches or Changing Coach Levels

Those wanting to become Paddlesport Coaches at Level 1 or 2 can take the new training course from October 2007.  Those who want to qualify as a Level 3 coach under the old scheme have until the end of March 2008 to pass the ‘Trainee’ status.

Existing BCU Coaches

The ‘old’ BCU Coach levels remain active until 2012. Every Coach must re-validate every three years by completing a new qualification or attending an update forum. 2012 is six years away from the inception date of the BCU UKCC scheme; therefore all active Coaches will have attended some form of re-training, or at the very least, two-update forums by the cut of date.

Trainee Coaches

Coaches who are trainees have three choices; they may drop their trainee status by not attending an assessment or update forum and will therefore revert back to their previous Coach level, they may attended an assessment and pass, or may convert to the new UKCC Coach level by attending a new assessment. Those choosing the new UKCC assessment option will also need to upgrade their star qualification to the new star scheme.
