Joining Southern Voices
Southern Voices has around 40 members. Although all of us are amateurs and many have challenging day jobs, singing is very much part of our lives and most of us sing in other choirs as well. We are always keen to hear from potential new members who are strong sight-readers.
We do not currently (June 2008) have any vacancies but, if you are interested in joining Southern Voices, please drop us a line and our Secretary, Sally Williams, will arrange for your name to be placed on a waiting list.
New members are selected by the musical director, Charles Stewart, after an audition at a mutually convenient time. It is helpful if you can prepare a song to your own taste, or even a well-known hymn, with which you can best demonstrate the pitch, timbre and range of your voice. You will undoubtedly also be given a sight-reading test.
Our concerts each year, usually five or six in number, typically include a Christmas concert in the Chapel of St Cross and a Passiontide concert in the Cathedral. The current rehearsal schedule can be viewed here. We usually meet on Tuesday evenings from 7.45pm-9.45pm in St Paul's Church, Winchester (behind the railway station). We also have occasional Saturday morning rehearsals, a maximum of one per concert (9.30am-12.30pm, either in St Paul's or in St Barnabas Church Hall, Weeke, Winchester). We do not normally rehearse during school holidays or at half term.
Each individual voice counts, so full commitment to attendance at rehearsals is of the utmost importance.
Southern Voices is self-governing and has an active committee.
Annual subscriptions are currently set at £95, payable in two instalments.
