Who are we?   Totton Running Club (TRC) was formed in 1984 by a small band of friends who wished to add a bit of discipline to their training but wanted to maintain a family atmosphere and avoid the elitism of larger running clubs.

How large is TRC?   TRC has a membership of about 100 of whom 50 are regular runners. The turnout on training nights can vary from as little as 10  or so on a cold winters night to a much larger group on a warm summer evening.

Where do we meet? Most winter sessions start at 7p.m. from the West Totton  Centre, Hazel Farm Road, Totton. In the summer months we meet at various venues in the New Forest and run on grass or forest tracks.

When do we meet?  We meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. We also meet at various points in the New Forest on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. See schedule

What standard is the club?  Our fastest runners do well in the Hampshire Cross Country League and our best veteran runners regularly win prizes in local races. A mixed team of runners has won 1st place in the annual Test Way Relay. Our ladies veteran team won 3rd place in the Hampshire Cross Country Championships.

But I'm just a jogger !  For every fast runner we have ten with much more modest aims. We aim also to run a begineers group starting in November  with the aim of building up to the Totton 10k in April.

How do we cope with a range of abilities ?  On Sundays the group may split into smaller groups running a gentle 2 or 3 miles or a faster group running 10 or 15 miles, or even 20 plus when marathon training. The Monday, Wednesday and Friday sessions are all designed to allow everyone to take part without killing the joggers or holding back the top runners. This is done by racing handicaps, pairing fast and slower in relays, organising tough lap sessions where the better runners run further and faster than the joggers but nevertheless maintain a club atmosphere. We have found the training nights work well with the top runners having the slower ones to chase, trying to lap them and the joggers trying hard not to be caught!

How serious is the training ?  As serious as you like! We have joggers who sometimes want to go out for a gentle run around the streets and others so keen to improve that they join in the tougher sessions. Our top people can be seriously stretched and at the same time as our slower members are inspired to improve. Everyone who joins us is interested in either losing weight or getting fitter but the degree of seriousness varies from committed athlete to social jogger.

Does the club enter in any competitive leagues ?  Yes ! Ever other Wednesday evening from April to September we compete in a local league, racing between 4 and 5 miles. In the winter we run in the Hampshire Cross Country League. There is also a local Sunday cross country league for runners who prefer a slightly lower key event.

Is it all running then ?  Definitely not! We have in the past arranged sports holidays to Club La Santa in Lanzarote, an Easter break in Brixam Devon. We organise skittles nights, trips to shows and other family events.

Totton 10k  We also organise  the Totton 10k (use link for up to date details).
