THE NATIONAL SCHOOL c.1910 - NOW THE HILLDENE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Although the National School on the corner of Chapel Road and the High Street had been in use since its construction in 1838, it soon became clear by the 1890's that it was inadequate for the children of West End's rapidly increasing population. By 1895 the infants department had moved into the little private school in Moorgreen Road recently vacated by Mrs Harriet Haselfoot.
Following many meetings and plans to extend the existing school, it was decided that the construction of a larger building on a new site was unavoidable. The new school was to be built on a sloping field, off the High Street, next to
