HOW IT WAS (1)
WEST END HIGH STREET

Image 4

A VIEW LOOKING DOWN THE HIGH STREET FROM NEW ROAD JUNCTION c.1950

A more unusual view of West End High Street looking from the New Road junction towards the Orchards Way and Chapel Road junction with High Street. Taken around 1950 it shows a distinct lack of traffic, somewhat different from today. The old Parish Hall (once the National School for West End built in 1838) is just behind the tree's on the right with the row of cottages leading up to the West End Brewery nearer the camera (the car is parked outside the pub). On the left hand side nearest the camera is Frays store (originally Langford's) followed by advertising hoardings and then the row of shops which included Beales, followed by the newsagents  (now a ladies dress shop - all these buildings are still standing), the telephone box can be seen outside what is today the Estate Agents.
