An Introduction to Scouting

Scouting has changed much since first devised by Baden Powell. It is now a world wide youth movement for 6 to 25 year olds. The aim is to develop young people (physically, mentally and spiritually) so that they may become responsible citizens. The programme provides young people with the opportunity to try new activities that they may not find elsewhere. You may not know that the Scout movement is a value based organisation and members are required to make a promise ("On my Honour I promise that I will do my best, to do my duty to God & the Queen, to help other people and to keep the Scout Law.")

Baden-Powell
Lord Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell of Gilwell, O.M., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., K.C.B.

Baden-Powell a returning war hero had written a book titled "Aids to Scouting", this was intended as a military training manual, teaching observation, tracking, initiative.. he discovered that many boys and young men were avidly reading his book Aids to Scouting.

B-P. met with various influential people in youth movements across the country, and was persuaded to write a version of Aids to Scouting aimed at teenage boys, Scouting for Boys was published in 1908 (after a camp on Brownsea Island, Poole Harbour, Dorset, where B-P. tried out his ideas on four patrols of boys from London and Bournemouth).

Activities done by members of the scout movement include Hikes, Map Reading, Compass Bearings, Camping, Wide Games, Attend Church Services and many more things as they progress through the movement.

Scouting has changed much since first devised by Baden Powell. It is now a world wide youth movement for 6 to 25 year olds. The aim is to develop young people (physically, mentally and spiritually) so that they may become responsible citizens.

The Scout Promise - to do my duty to the Queen
The Queen is the United Kingdom's Head of State, the Commonwealth Head of State, and she is also Queen of a number of Commonwealth realms (Australia, New Zealand and Canada).

The Queen is the patron of the scouting movement.
The Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II took place in the Abbey Church of St. Peter, Westminster, on Tuesday, the second day of June, 1953. During the ceremony the Queen was presented a Bible with the following words " Our gracious Queen: to keep your Majesty ever mindful of the law and the Gospel of God as the Rule for the whole life and government of Christian Princes, we present you with this Book, the most valuable thing that this world affords. Here is Wisdom; This is the royal Law; These are the lively Oracles of God"

The National Anthem

God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.

Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign.
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen.

Saint George

St. George, Patron Saint of Scouting
"Prepared and alert a Scout follows the lead of our Patron Saint George and his spirited steed."
- Baden-Powell in "Scouting for Boys"

  • SAINT GEORGE AND SCOUTING FOR BOYS
Scouts are expected to follow the example of St George and on the 23rd April all Scouts remind themselves of their Promise and of the Scout Law

    Saint George martyred
Emperor Dioclesian was a great persecutor of Christians. The people took St. George before Emperor Diocletian and he cried in their midst saying: “For how long will you pour your anger out against the innocent Christians and force those who know the true faith to adopt the fraudulent faith that you yourself are in doubt of? The emperor tried to get him to stop being a Christian but St George would not recant his faith and he was dragged through the streets and beheaded by the sword on the first day of May 303. He was only 23 years old..

The Emperor's wife, Alexandria was so impressed at the Saint's courage that she became a Christian and so too was put to death.

Many were converted to Christianity, they knew that St George worshiped The real God, Jesus Christ the Living God and that the other gods are devils.

    Saint George legend
St. George was born in Cappadocia in the year AD 303. He enlisted as a cavalry soldier when he was seventeen, and soon became renowned for his bravery. On one occasion he came to a pagan town in Libya (named Selem), that was terrorised by a dragon who had to be fed daily. The local people tried to satisfy it by giving it sheep to eat, but when it was still hungry they started sacrificing some of the people (each one drawn by lot) throwing them to the beast. The day St. George came there, the lot had fallen upon the king's daughter, princess Cleolinda. Good Saint George came along went out and attacked the dragon, who lived in a swamp close by, slaughtered it and rescued the fair princess. At this the townsfolk converted to Christianity.

    The Cross of St. George
The Cross of St. George is the ecclesiastical flag in England and is the foundation of the Union of Jack, the national standard of England. The image of St. George slaying the dragon continues to be seen in artistic renderings all over the world to symbolize the victory of good over evil; God over Satan.

St George: Prince of the Martyrs
"The blood of the martyrs is the seeds of the church." A martyr is a person who loves Christ until death, just like our Savior who loved us until the cross. "Always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus. For we who live are always deliv ered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also be mani fested in our mortal flesh." (2 Corinthians 4: 10-11)

    the George Cross
In 1940, King George V1 instituted the George Cross for 'acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger'.

The Scout Promise - to do my duty to God

    The Word of God
When asked where religion came into Scouting and Guiding, Baden- Powell replied, It does not come in at all. It is already there. It is a fundamental factor underlying Scouting and Guiding." (Religion and the Boy Scout and Girl Guides Movement-- an address, 1926).

"I don't mean by this the mere soldiering and sailoring services; we have no military aim or practice in our movement; but I mean the ideals of service for their fellow-men. In other words, we aim for the practice of Christianity in their everyday life and dealings, and not merely the profession of its theology on Sundays.... The co-operation of tiny sea insects has brought about the formation of coral islands. No enterprise is too big where there is goodwill and co-operation carrying it out. Every day we are turning away boys anxious to join the Movement, because we have no the men or women to take them in hand. There is a vast reserve of loyal patriotism and Christian spirit lying dormant in our nation to-day, mainly because it sees no direct opportunity for expressing itself. Here in this joyous brotherhood there is vast opportunity open to all in a happy work that shows results under your hands and a work that is worth while because it gives every man his chance of service for his fellow-men and for God. " (Scouting for Boys 1908)
