PHILLIMORE HAMPSHIRE MARRIAGE REGISTERS VOl 1 to 15 Vol 1 -12 were downloaded from http://midas.ac.uk/genuki/big/eng/HAM/ on 18.2.1998 and 18.6.1998 Vol 13 sent by Reg Moore 7.2.1999 Vol 14 sent by Reg Moore June 1999 Vol 15 sent by Reg Moore 21 Dec 1999 and combined together by R H Johnston 1 July 1998, 9.2.1999, 6.7.1999, 21.12.1999 Phillimores Hampshire Parish Records. These files provide an index to the names in Phillimores Hampshire marriage registers that are located at the Wellington City Council library, (NZ). There are 16 volumes in the Hampshire series. The volumes were printed around 1900 and were a limited edition of 150 copies and it appears that few complete sets still exist. A set of 16 fiche that covers all 16 volumes is available from the Hampshire Records Office, Sussex Street, Winchester, Hampshire, England. SO23 8TH. These are in the same format as the books, that is by parish, then in date order, not sorted alphabetically. The intention is to index all the volumes in that series. It should be noted than when these books were prepared around 1900 from the original parish records a number of those records were missing and particularly in the early entries, some of the details were illegible. Also the books notes that there have been instances of the original records having been tampered with, and refers to the Shipway pedigree case, (C.1900) where several forged entries were made in the Gloucestershire Parish Records. It is possible for errors to have been made at each stage including the original registers as there are a number of comments by later vicars regarding the quality of some of the early entries. Also included is PHILMPAR which is a list of all the parishes included in the set of 16 volumes. This notes that KNIGHT'S ENHAM is now named ENHAM ALAMEIN. This may help those who, like myself, were unable understand why they could not find KNIGHT'S ENHAM on modern maps of Hampshire. In a number of cases, although not in every case, the books provide additional material such as the parish they are from when different from that of the marriage, whether they were minors, and in a few cases the name of the parents. The original intention was to include this information as a separate file, as was the case with the sample of the first 3 or 4 parishes of volume one circulated earlier. To do this would delay completion of the index, and so this has not been continued with. For those who do not have access to the volumes or the fiche and wish to see if there is any further information on specific entries I can look those up. This applies just to volumes 1 to 15 at this stage. These being the ones for which I have prepared an index. See Contact information at end of file. I would stress that I have not attempted to transcibe all the information in these volumes. The purpose was to provide an index to the names contained in them. Only the names of the bride and groom, whether they were a widow(er), the date and the parish are provided. Titles, occupations, parish of residence etc., have not been included. It is therefore strongly recommended that if you locate names of interest, the volumes or the fiche should be checked as there may be more information there. This could be an occupation, the parish they were from, or whether they were minors at the time of the marriage. Not all entries are in chonological order, and have been kept in the same order that they appear in the marriage files and fiche. While every care has been taken in transcribing these entries it is possible that some errors have slipped through. If you should come across any, I would appreciate being advised of them so that I can correct the files. DATA LAYOUT: The format of these files is as follows. ALL1_4.TSV All the data for Volumes 1 to 4 ALL5_7.TSV All the data for Volumes 5 to 7 ALL8_10.TSV All the data for Volumes 8 to 10 ALL11_13.TSV All the data for Volumes 11 to 13 ALL14_15.TSV All the data for Volumes 14 to 15 Volume 16 not yet available. These TSV files can be loaded into a spreadsheet like EXCEL. An additional file for Volumes 10 & 15 is SHIPS.TSV - list of ships. PHILMPAR.WSL or PARISH.TXT List showing which volume contains which parish. ******* The following to next ******* applies only to freestanding versions on Internet, not to Yateley Society History database. An MSDOS PROGRAM is available, provided by R H Johnston to view the files easily and sort them, select etc. This program is copyright R H Johnston 1998. The files are VWRTSV.COM VWRTSV.MEN VWRTSV.HLP VWR.COM (The *.LNS files are used by this program.) To use the program put these files and the one(s) to read in the same directory, and to read ALL11_13.TSV, say, type: VWRTSV ALL11_13 Thereafter follow the instructions. A help file is provided, which is accessed from within the program. Note: The program needs a lot of DOS memory to run, especially if sorting the whole file. ********* EACH FILE CONTAINS, FOR EACH VOLUME: List of all the MARRIAGES Contains ONLY the essential information about the marriage entry, the names of the groom and bride, whether a widow(er), date, age if given, and the parish where the wedding is recorded. Additional information may be found in the books or fiche, such as their home parish, occupation etc., in one case even a street address is shown. List of all the ALIASES Alternative names for some entries, where they either used other names, or where the records were not clearly legible and alternative possibilities were given in the book, or where it has been noted the signature name differs from the record. These are only included these where there are significant differences in the surname. They do not include those where the only difference is an `e' on the end of the name. Vol 4: (Most of these entries arise from the marriage records.) List of OTHER PEOPLE All the other names mentioned in the book (generally parents, employers, witnesses, ministers, rectors, curates etc.) Vol 11: (excludes burial entries in the file H11_BUR2.txt). GENERAL NOTES: Where a year is shown in these files as `(1700?)', it is where the books and fiche do not show the year. A year is provided in that form, from adjacent entries so that they can be located in the marriage files and fiche. All entries in the list of marriages are in the same order as the book and fiche. Where they are not in chronological sequence, this is how they are listed in the books. SPECIAL NOTES ON EACH VOLUME: VOLUME 1. Transcript dated: March 1995 MARRIAGES: w.= widow(er). ? = entry illegible in original register, where entry appears to be out of sequence or where year may refer to ecclesiastic year. C.C. = Corpus Christiday, 9 Jun 1558 on (old) Julian Calendar T.M. = Trinity Monday. In 1619 this was either; old calendar, 20 May; new calendar, 17 May; or 26 May. VOLUME 2 Transcript dated: 31 July 1995 OTHERS: w.s.t. = Were (was) servant to Within volume 2 of these parish records are several comments which give an indication of the state of some of the original records. "The Rev.Mr.Thomas late minister of Yateley in the county of Southton having almost wholly neglected to register Christenings or Marriages from the year 1710 to the year 1730. Therefore to supply that Defficiency the Minister and Church Wardens have collected what intelligence they could from the Memoirs of Families in the Parish (publick notice being given of that Defect in the Church) in order to have the same recorded in the Parish Register. But most Families in the Parish having only recorded the Day of their Children's Birth, the Day of their being baptised is infer'd only by Conjecture." "There are two Register Books, the first commencing in the year 1763, it is bound but very much out of condition, many of the leaves torn and some of them missing. Marriages, Baptisms, and Burials are entered. Marriages up to 1754, Baptisms and Burials up to 1812 inclusive. There is no entry of Burials from 1730 to 1756, nor of Baptisms from 1740 to 1747, after which periods the entries of both appear very regular, though much intermixed. The second book commences 1754, it is unbound, and the leaves very much worn and decayed. Marriages are alone entered there, but there appear deficiencies, several years intervening without any entry, (erased), down to 1808, no entry from 1773 to 1779 the longest period; a leaf probably is lost, but, not being numbered, this is only conjecture; no entry from November, 1807 JOHN ORDE, Rector, T.WINTON, Churchwarden." "The above written statement, in the handwriting of my predecessor, the Rev. John Orde, is in all respects correct. Finding that the two Register Books, alluded to by him, were in a condition not only defective, but also so dilapidated and decaying that there was the probability of their soon becoming useless for reference, I have, with my own hand, put them into such repair as their state permitted of. And I hereby declare that in making this repair, no entry has been removed, displaced, mutilated, effaced, or in any wise altered, or interfered with. RICHARD FITZGERALD WINSLADE, Rector of Winslade. July 1st, 1863." VOLUME 3 Transcript dated: 1 Oct 1995 There are some obvious printing errors in volume 3 such as 99 Jan 1764 in HARTLEY WINTNEY. These have been copied as they appear. VOLUME 4 Transcript dated: 11 December 1995 MARRIAGES: There are around 74 marriage entries between 1715 and 1731 at the end of the WINTON list of marriages in the book that were not included in the main list. The entries have been kept in the same order as they appear in the book/fiche. Note. w = widow(er). This volume also contains burials, christenings and marriages at WINTON (Winchester) Cathedral and ST.SWITHUN-UPON-KINGSGATE, Winchester. (Only marriages are recorded for CRONDALL.) OTHERS: w.s.t. = was(were) servants to. m.a.m. = Minister at marriage of.. BAPTISMS are in a separate list: With the entries that refer to `Rev.Sir Peter Rivers Gay', I am not certain whether the family surname is RIVERS, GAY, or both, and have listed these as RIVERS GAY Peter etc. These occur at WINTON on 17 Nov 1773, 11 Dec 1775, 25 Oct 1777, 25 Jan 1780, 15 Jan 1782, 18 Oct 1784. Also in WINTON I am uncertain about the surname of children of William, Earl of Northesk. On 9 Dec 1800, the baptism of Jane Christian, and on 23 Aug 1811, the baptism of Georgiana Henrietta indicates the family surname is CARNEGIE and I have shown it as that in the file. However this does not appear to be so for the baptism of John on 28 Jul 1807, where the name is noted as John Jervis. With this entry I have put NORTHESK? as the surname. Unless it is has been necessary for clarity I have not included titles with any entry. Also to keep within the width of the page I have had to omit second christian names or abbreviate them in most cases. BURIALS for both WINTON and ST.SWITHUN are in separate burial lists With the name `Rev.Sir Peter Rivers Gay' that appears twice in this burial index, at WINTON, 28 Jul 1790 and 17 Apr 1794, I am not certain which is the surname. I have listed the name in first instance as `RIVERS GAY Peter', and in second, in the RELATIVE column, as `Peter Rev.'. Except where it is necessary for clarity, I have not included titles in the entries. This was to reduce the width of the page as much as possible. VOLUME 5 Transcript dated February 1996 MARRIAGES: Note: A few entries are date of banns, not marriage. w = widow(er) v = vidua OTHERS: In a number of instances the information has been abbreviated to fit in this file, and the book or fiche should be checked for additional information regarding any of these entries. w.s.t. = was(were) servants to. m.a.m. = Minister at marriage of.. VOLUME 6 Transcript dated: 20 April 1995 Prior to C.1586 in ODIHAM the brides surname was not recorded. It should also be noted that in HECKFIELD a number of dates are out of sequence in the volume and it is possible there are printing errors in the dates. While this does occur in other parishes, it happens to a greater extent in Heckfield with some entries 50 years out of sequence. If therefore you do not find the date you are looking for in the right place, check those 50 or so years either side of it, or use the search facility in your program. ? = Entry not known or illegible. In some cases the year refers to the ecclesiastical year, and not the calendar year. In one instance two years entries appear to have been given the same year, and other entries are out of sequence. These are all exactly as shown in the volume. Adjacent entries should be examined before assuming the correct calendar year is shown. There are probably also printing or copying errors, one date is shown as 31 Feb 1586. Compared with other parishes, in this volume and others in the series, the spelling of the names in the early entries in ODIHAM is remarkably consistent. The spelling is also more modern than would be expected, and it is possible that at the transcription of the original ODIHAM parish records, the names in the register were not recorded exactly as they appeared in the parish record. The names in this file have been exactly as they appear in the book other than where there it can be assumed there is a printing error, such as Fhilpott instead of Philpott. In some instances a middle name is shown and these have been included where there has been room within the columns, however there is no way of telling whether that middle name is a christian name or is part of a double surname. In most cases Frances is the female name, and Francis, male, but there are exceptions to this. Also a bride whose name is shown as John, and a grooms name as Martha. These may be printing etc., errors. Where there are duplicated entries in the book these have been included if there is a difference in the date or spelling between the entries. OTHERS w.s.t. = 'was (or were) servant(s) to' VOLUME 7 Transcript dated: 24 May 1995 Some of the entries in the volume for ELING are out of sequence. Two latin phrases appear on some ELING records, Eodem die, and ult (May). [Incorrect note as given by Reg Moore: The general view is that Eodem die means `on this day', which is not very helpful 300 years later for anyone wanting to know what that date was. To enable an entry in the index of names to be located in the list of marriages, or the book or fiche, I have added the year to that entry as `Eodem die(1666)'. The year I have included is assumed from its location in the register. Eodem die could possibly mean the same date as the previous entry but this is uncertain at this stage. The expression `ult', should, according to those whose knowledge of Latin is better than mine, mean the last day of the previous month. However given the comments in the volumes regarding the quality of some of the original records it is possible it was not used in the correct sense and may refer to the last day of the stated month.] Note correcting the above by R H Johnston: Eodem die means "the same day". I.e. the same day as previous entry. ult means "the last day". I.e. the last day of the month shown. VOLUME 8 Transcript dated: October 1996 MARRIAGES: Note: A few entries are date of banns, not marriage. w = widow(er) v = vidua As there were a number of instances in volume 8 of the persons age being given, I have included this as this could be helpful for those tracing their ancestors. OTHERS: In a number of instances the information has been abbreviated to fit in this file, and the book or fiche should be checked for additional information regarding any of these entries. VOLUME 9 Transcript dated: 8 Feb 1997 MARRIAGES: Note: Where `Mrs.' has been included with the name, this is how it appears in the book. It would appear to indicate social status rather than they were a widow. The marriage of Charls KING and Catherine STRONG, at PRESTON CANDOVER, gives the date as "ut sup" 1695. I am have not found out what this means. It could be the date of next marriage, 11 Dec 1695. Both of those marriages are out of sequence with the dates of others on that page.(p.141 of the book). [Note by R H Johnston: ut sup means "as above" - hence the year date ought to by 1620. Is the 1695 of the next entry a mistake?] ALIASES: There an unusually large proportion of aliases in one parish, East Woodhay. Presumably there is a reason for that. OTHERS: w.s.t.= was servant to m.a.w.= Minister at wedding VOLUME 10 Transcript dated: 27 July 1997 MARRIAGES: All the marriages in Volume 10 are at St.Thomas a Becket, Portsmouth. This covers the years from 1653 to 1700. The remaining entries (1704-1775) are in Volume 15. ALIASES are fairly rare, and these are almost always a possible alternative due to difficulties in reading the register. OTHERS: m.a.w = `Minister' at wedding (in some cases is Mayor or Alderman) wit. = Witness at wedding. In some cases they have been witness at a number of weddings, only a few of those weddings are included here. SHIPS: An additional file for Volume 10 (& Volume 15) is SHIPS.TSV. There were a very large number of ships mentioned in this volume and so I thought a list of these may be of some use as an indication of when certain ships were at Portsmouth. The list for Volume 10 is an Alphabetical list - this list is not correlated with the marriage entries. [HOWEVER - note that in the notes VOL 15 is is noted that this may NOT necessarily indicate that the particular ship was in port at that time - R H Johnston] VOLUME 11 Transcript dated 15 September 1997 MARRIAGES: A question mark following a name or date indicates either that this is how it appears in the volume, or that a possible other name or alias is given. In the latter case that other name will be included in the OTHERS list. BANNS BENTWORTH. Banns published. It is noted in the volume that names given in the list of marriages are not repeated here. The names here are NOT in the index of marriages. OTHERS: m.a.w = Minister at wedding wit. = Witness at wedding. In some cases they have been witness at a number of weddings, only a few of those weddings are included here. w.s.t. = Were servant(s) to BAPTISMS These are on pages 13 to 16 of this volume. As all these entries are in Latin, I was not able to show the day of the month except where it was shown as a figure. The surname of the child is taken to be that of the parents, but with the entries for CUMMING / RASHLEIGH and BLACKSTONE / WILLIAMS it is not quite clear which of the parents surname it should be. BURIALS Except where it is necessary for clarity, I have not included titles in the entries. This was to reduce the width of the page as much as possible. With some entries, both date of death and that of issue of certificate are given, in those instances I have shown the date of death only. BURIALS - OTHER PEOPLE Names of other persons, witnesses etc., mentioned in the burial records at WINCHESTER COLLEGE. Unless the spelling is different, there is a separation of some years, or the reference is to two different relatives, I have only included a name once. It may also appear in other burial entries. Page number is that of the Phillimore Hampshire Records, Vol 11, and refers to the page number where the particular entry starts. VOLUME 12 Transcript dated: 17 November 1997 MARRIAGES: A question mark following a name or date indicates either that this is how it appears in the volume, or that a possible other name or alias is given. In the latter case that other name will be included in the OTHERS list. w = widow(er) Pte. = private Cpl. = corporal Sgt. = Sergeant The entries are as they appear in the book, I have not corrected entries where it appears there could be a typographical error. In a very few cases I have had to abbreviate a second christian name to fit the name in the space available. OTHERS: m.a.w = Minister at wedding wit. = Witness at wedding. In some cases they have been witness at a number of weddings, only a few of those weddings are included here. w.s.t. = Were servant(s) to An interesting entry appears on page 32, it appears in the book as, "Richd. Andrewes & Mary White.w., md. at Godshill, being the third wife in 13 weeks... 16 Oct 1694 (Brading)" Richd. Andrewes was not noted as being a widower, and the only other marriage under that name was to Ann Morice, at Godshill on 26 Jul 1694, in the Brading records where also it was not noted that he was a widower. For those not familiar with the Isle of Wight there is a book titled, Isle of Wight Villages by Patricia Sibley, published by Robert Hale, London, in 1983. ISBN 0 7090 0833 3. This book gives some historical information about the parishes in this volume and some of the families. VOLUME 13 Transcript dated 16 January 1999 All the entries in this volume are of marriages at ST. MAURICE, WINCHESTER, from 1538 to 1837 OTHERS: m.a.w = Minister at wedding wit. = Witness at wedding. In some cases they have been witness at a number of weddings, only a few of those weddings are included here. w.s.t. = Were servant(s) to VOLUME 14 Transcript dated 30 May 1999 All the entries in this volume are of marriages at NEWPORT I.O.W., and are are from 1541 to 1837 [the numbering of the first few entries in the 1570s appears to be a mistake, but this has not been corrected - R H Johnston] OTHERS: m.a.w = Minister at wedding wit. = Witness at wedding. In some cases they have been witness at a number of weddings, only a few of those weddings are included here. w.s.t. = Were servant(s) to INL = In Law Note: In some cases the reference to a relative being present at the wedding has been written in manner that is ambiguous, as for TRATTLE/OGLANDER 28 Apr 1656, "in presence of Edward Trattle, his father, her mother, Mr. John Billinghurst, her father-in-lawe, the Register and others." While it is a reasonable assumption that Edward Trattle would be the father of groom, it is not certain, particularly with other entries that have been wriiten in this form but with names that are not the same as the bride or groom. It is also not entirely clear that Mr. John Billinghurst is the brides father in law, or if it just mentions that the father in law was present but without giving his name, as is the case with the brides mother. In light of this I suggest that researchers do not rely on the relationships suggested in this table without other confirmation. VOLUME 15 Transcript dated 20 Dec 1999 All the entries in this volume are of marriages at Portsmouth, and is the second volume of Portsmouth marriages and has those from 1701 to 1775 OTHERS: m.a.w = Minister at wedding wit. = Witness at wedding. In some cases they have been witness at a number of weddings, only a few of those weddings are included here. w.s.t. = Were servant to SHIPS: Additional information from Volume 15 concerns ships (in the order given, from 1759 to 1775) and is included in SHIPS.TSV. The list of the ships mentioned in Vol. 15, similar to those mentioned in Vol 10, which has the earlier records for Portsmouth. Note: These are the names of ships (or Naval Base) of which the groom was at the time of the wedding, or had previously been, a member of the crew. It does not necessarily indicate that the particular ship was in port at that time. All the ships listed, with one exception, are noted as being H.M.S. CONTACT PERSON: I can be contacted through the bulletin boards fidonet areas, NET, or NZG. Also I usually keep a watch on UKG, and R_UK. My local bulletin board is Genboard, Wellington, NZ. The (FIDO) NET address is 3:771/160. If you do leave a message for me on those fidonet areas, could you please include in the message the name, location and (fido) net address of the Bulletin Board you use, so that I can reply to the message. The reason for this request is that some time ago there was a change to the system, and now many messages originating outside NZ, only show the address of the gateway by which they enter New Zealand, and not the country or BBS it came from. A number of BBS services have closed down in the past year, and I am not certain how long the one I use will remain in operation, however it is still operating at this time. My main e-mail address is, regmoore@paradise.net.nz The e mail address given previously, regmoore@xtra.co.nz Is still operating but I do not check it as frequently.
